Lion Frank had been a loyal member of the San Pedro Lions Club for over 62 years. He was born in San Pedro on May 12, 1916 and lived his entire life in San Pedro. He graduated from San Pedro High School. He established the Trani's Shoe System store where one could buy a new pair of shoes and have their old shoes repaired in the same store. Lion Frank specialized in custom fitting and modification of shoes to correct the cause of foot and shoe problems. He studied under Dr. William M. Scholl at the American School of Practipedics in Chicago, Illinois. Many people walked a lot better and pain free thanks to the skill and work of Frank Trani. Frank Trani was also very active in commercial real estate development and was very instrumental in the original development along the west side of Western Avenue along with other areas of Southern California. Lion Frank Trani was a lifetime member of Mary Star of the Sea Church and served as an usher. He was also a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, a member of the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Men's Association, Chairman of Off Street Parking, and Chairman of the Blood Bank. He will be greatly missed. Our prayers and thoughts are with the Trani family. Mr. and Miss San Pedro Contest The Mr. & Miss San Pedro Scholarship Contest for teens and young adults begins this week! Student Speaker Contest Last Tuesday, April 5th, I was privileged to witness the District 4-L3 68th Annual Southern Region Student Speaker Contest. The contest was held at El Pollo Inka Restaurant in Gardena. There were a total of three competitors in all. However, our contestant, Deborah Ruiz, was unable to participate due to doctor's orders regarding a recurrent throat condition. The two remaining competitors gave superb speeches on this year's topic, "Is Attitude the Key to Success?" Each contestant was able to develop their speaking styles and presentations along with learning about working with service organizations. While the judges were tabulating the scores we were treated to a tasty dinner of salad, chicken and rice. In a show of good sportsmanship, Deborah attended to support her fellow competitors and was awarded a certificate of participation. The next contest will be held on Saturday, April 23, 1:30p.m. at the Shriners Hospital for Children (Auditorium) 3160 Geneva St., Los Angeles. - Susan Dorsey You can contact Lion Tom or Susan at 310-831-6245.
