Student Speaker Contest

The Student Speaker Contest was held on February 17th at our regular noon meeting at Antes Restaurant. Chairperson Vince Zabica opened the contest announcing that this was the 53rd year the club has participated in the contest. We were fortunate to have two experienced Toastmasters, Philip Felando and William Gram, for our judges. Their constructive critique was informative and will be a valuable tool to use in upcoming contests. 

Deborah Ruiz, the contest winner, has been invited to present her speech at the next Toastmasters meeting, and is fine-tuning her presentation for her upcoming competition at the Zone Level. We wish her the very best. The topic for this years contest was "Is Attitude the Key to Success?"  Deborah attends the "City of Angeles Independent Studies" program at the Toberman Settlement House. Her teacher, Pat McCullough, remembered his own experience in High School as a participant in the Student Speaker contest.

We appreciate all of Lion Vince's hard work on this contest once again.


Councilwoman Janice Hahn to speak at Tri Club Meeting
Be sure to attend the February 24th Tri Club meeting!  15th District Councilwoman Janice Hahn will be our featured speaker. Invite your friends, relatives, business associates, and neighbors for an informative and fun dinner meeting.

Flag Day

Lions Club Flag Day was held on Friday, February 18th.  Lions met at Wayne Bettis Office at 8:30 am to fortify themselves with coffee and donuts.   We visited the kindergarten classes of 12 elementary schools in San Pedro to handout flags and give a short lesson in "Old Glory" to the children.  

Lions Wayne Bettis, Frank Colello, Tom and Susan Dorsey and their daughter Valerie O'Melveny, Chris and Eddie Keyse, Gojko Spralja, and David Staley braved the rain and visited the schools.

This event was very fulfilling activity and a great opportunity to help instill a spirit of true patriotism and respect for our flag in some of San Pedro's youngest citizens. 

Lions Lauren Cotner and Wayne Bettis did an excellent job of organizing Flag Day. Thank you all!
