The Lions Tale December 2009 President’s Report On November 21st, I attended the Area 4-L3 gala Presidents dinner dance, accompanied by my son, Patrick. We were presented formally to the entire audience of Presidents and other attendees then seated at the head table. The evening was most glamorous and I felt a little like a movie star. All of us dressed in formal evening attire and looked extremely elegant. Tom and Susan also attended in their finery but sat on the ball room floor since this was “Presidents’ Night.” I was very glad to see a familiar face, however! And Susan kindly took pictures of us. Thanks to all of the San Pedro Lions for sending me to this very high class evening. San Pedro Lions Club Peace Poster Contest On First Thursday, November 4th, San Pedro Lion Annette Ciketic hosted our Club’s Peace Poster Exhibit at fINdings Art Center. Participating was The Boys and Girls Club of the Los Angeles Harbor, Dodson Middle School and Rolling Hills Prep School. With so many great posters judging proved very difficult. The criteria are originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme, “The Power of Peace.” Matthew Pundamiera of Dodson Middle School won 1st Place for $50.00, Taariq Nassar of Dodson won 2nd place and $25.00 and Minh-Tam Nguyen of Rolling Hills Prep won 3rd place and $25.00. The presentations were made by our President Sheri Thompson. Also presenting the winners with elaborate Certificates from the City of Los Angeles was Ana Dragin, from Councilwoman Janice Hahn’s office. Other Lions in attendance were Tom & Susan Dorsey, Mitch Harmatz, David Staley and Mike Weitzman. Two weeks later at the LA New Millenium Club House in the garden of PDG Sid and Violi Sioson, the District competition was held. Lion Susan Dorsey took Matthew’s poster to the competition, but sadly she brought it back as Sabrina Tan from Rowland Heights won. Lion Vangie Santa Maria chaired this event and arranged for artists to judge the competition. It took two rounds to pick a winner. Everyone was treated to a pot luck lunch. San Pedro Lions Club Holiday Celebration The annual San Pedro Lions Club Holiday Celebration Party will be held on Thursday, December 10th at 6:30 PM. Once again, PDG Eddie and Lion Chris Keyse are graciously hosting event at their lovely home. The address is 1743 Chandeleur Drive, San Pedro, CA 90732. PDG Eddie and Lion Chris request that you bring a $15 exchange gift and a healthy appetite! Harbor City/Lomita Lions Club Fish Dinner Fundraiser & Raffle We had a short board meeting before the festivities and got a lot of work completed. Ten of us attended and all had a good time, fellowship and won some prizes. The Harbor City/Lomita Lions Club had a very successful event that was “standing room only”. We are looking forward to next year’s event! Special Event Regulations Workshop On November 17th, Lions Eddie Keyse, Frank Colello, Susan Dorsey and Gary Bettis, attended a forum at the Torrance Holiday Inn. The workshop provided information about working with the City of Los Angeles and the new permit and fee process. In an effort to maximize revenue, the City of Los Angeles has started a more formal program to use in holding events. Many functions will have to re-evaluate their planning with the new fee regulations. We were encouraged to work closely with our Council Field Representative, Ana Dragin, from Councilwoman Janice Hahn’s office. Lions from the Wilmington and Harbor City/Lomita Lions Clubs also attended the workshop. District Membership Meeting The Second District Membership Meeting was held at the Culver City Veterans Auditorium on November 21, 2009. The Southern Region under the direction of RC Art Friedman provided an extensive Continental Breakfast for all of the Lions who attended. Zone A brought much of the food including bagels, sweet rolls, yogurt, butter, cream cheese and fruit platters. The San Pedro Lions provided all of the dairy products. Forty Lions Clubs were represented at the Membership meeting and 43 Clubs were to attend the Presidents Dinner. District Governor Rudy Salvio announced that after a unanimous vote by the 4L-3 Cabinet, the District is going to initiate a new voluntary “Mass Installation of Club Officers” during the Governors Ball at the Annual District Convention. DG Rudy Salvio’s membership objective this year is for each Club to have one positive member of growth. Members were also encouraged to have spouses join or other family members. Reports were given for all District Projects, Zones, and the Central Region Clubs. After the District Membership Meeting was finished, all of the food that had not been consumed by Hungry Lions was carefully gathered up. Lions ZC Tom and Susan Dorsey took the food to Beacon House in San Pedro. The food was quickly unloaded by members of Beacon House who gave a great big “Thank you!” to the Lions Club. Rose Parade Float Decorating Lions Susan Dorsey and Taylor O’Melveny joined by their family members Valerie & Cris Cornell had a fun time in Pasadena working on the Lions Club International Rose Parade float. This year’s float is in the form of an old steam calliope. Lion Susan said: “We started out snipping off petals of dried flowers and moved on to pasting seeds on various areas. We have a new appreciation for all the hours it takes to complete the floats” The Lions Club International Rose Parade float is expected to be viewed by 400 Million people worldwide. For more information see http://www.lionsrosefloat.com .The last date for volunteering is Tuesday, 12/29/2009, between 8 AM - 4 PM. Your help is really needed. Bring a family member or a friend. Working on the float is a great way to introduce people to Lionism. PDG Eddie Keyse, President Sheri Thompson and Lions Mike Weitzman and David Staley marched and rode in the Parade. The San Pedro Lions Club was joined by a large number of children from the Toberman Community Center who carried banners for both the Lions Club and Toberman. Lunch was provided for the children from the Toberman Community Center by the Lions. PDG Eddie Keyse drove the massive new Mobile Screening Unit in the parade. The unit was one of the largest vehicles in the event. Most of the local community was unaware of the new Mobile Screen Unit until they saw it in the parade. The event was an excellent opportunity to show San Pedro and the Harbor Community the true Spirit of Lionism and the efforts made by Lions under the motto “We Serve”.
