SAN.PEDO LIONS CLUB 87 YEARS OF COMMITMENT. September 2009 PRESIDENT’S REPORT President’s Note: On the 22d of August, I, along with Tom and Susan Dorsey, attended my first Lions District Membership Meeting in Culver City. Impressive is the multitude of Lions clubs in the Los Angeles area. I learned that there are three regions: North, Central and South. Each area has a Region Chairperson. Our Region Chair, Art Friedman, works hard to be at all major Lions functions in his region and I’ve gotten to know him since he is so often with us. Each Region has four Zones, with five or six clubs. Our region has a total of 22 clubs with 437 members. Our San Pedro zone chair is SP Lion, Tom Dorsey. He also covers El Camino, Gardena, North Torrance, South Torrance, and Rolling Hills. Joann Valle tells me Harbor City has also joined Tom’s group to continue working with San Pedro. Each Lions club supports many projects that serve their community. Serving as your president has opened my eyes to the many dimensions of Lionism! I also learned that LIONS stands for: L = Liberty I = Intelligence 0 Our N = Nation’s S = Safety Respectfully submitted, Lion Sherriljean Thompson, President August has been a very busy month, read on TRI-CITY MEETING — Ante’s Restaurant - August 27th Harbor City and Wilmington met with us for our monthly meeting. We were fortunate to have two speakers at this event. The first speaker was from the Port of Los Angeles. He expressed a concern that for over 10 years the plan for Port Development on the San Pedro side has been studied and evaluated without any conclusions made. His concern is that Wilmington has passed their plan but San Pedrans have not been able to develop a consensus. He believes it is imperative to approve a plan for the future development of the Port of Los Angeles if we want businesses to support our job market in San Pedro. The second speaker discussed investments. His opinion is that we should seriously consider investment in stocks at this time. He believes the economy is going to improve In the near future and stocks are an outstanding way to see a future return on today’s investment. DOWNHILL RACE AND CAR SHOW— Point Fermin - Sunday, August 30th What a great success! Many Lions worked hard on this successful event. Eddie Keyse did a fabulous job of coordinating the racers in two categories with the help of Evan and Eddie’s grandson and sister at the sign-in table and on the mic. Lion Dennis Lord and Eddie’s oldest son Ken work the starting ramp for the past 10 years. Eddie brought contingent of youth to sell food while Sheri sold t-shirts with the help of Joeann Valle and Sherry Zacher from Harbor City-Lomita. Susan ran the raffle sales at the next table, then after the race she helped the Wilmington Lions with their food booth in the park. RELATED LIONS FUNCTIONS: MOBILE SCREENING UNIT - Alpine Village - August 18th Tom and Susan represented our club at the installation of officers for the new Mobil Screening Unit. A very pleasant evening was enjoyed with Lions from a multitude of South Bay clubs. POINT VICENTE — Palos Verdes Lions — August 19th. Four SP Lion couples represented our club at the Palos Verdes Lions dinner in the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. The Interpretive Center, which is open to the public, and is dedicated to the study of coastal whales, can be found on the PV coast near Terenea Resort. A delightful dinner was served. Afterwards a Center docent informed us about kinds of whales passing through our costal area, as well as prehistoric whales found in the cliffs behind the Center. INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS - August 22nd This year’s Lions officers were officially installed at the Marriot Renaissance Hotel near LAX. Tom, Susan, Taylor and Evan represented San Pedro Lions at this wonderful dinner. Sheri wishes she had been at the installation instead of the wedding she had committed to attend! COMING SOON on OCTOBER 8th Lion Debbie Cross is working very hard, creating the tickets and flyer announcing our Fall Dining Out for Canine Companions for Independence Charity dinner. The date was rescheduled from September 18th, Be sure to put this special evening on your calendar. The proceeds from the event will go to train dogs to assist people in need. Don’t get mixed up with the San Pedro lions from Belize! 08/22/09 District 4-L3 Cabinet Installation Saturday evening August 22, 2009 at the LAX Renaissance Hotel the new district officers were installed in a truly gala event. The gentlemen were attired in dashing white dinner jackets accented with red bow ties and red cummerbunds, and the ladies wore formal gowns. The cabinet was escorted in the ballroom in a grand procession. During dinner we were entertained by the musical talent of Lions Vangie and Robert Crowther among others. The installing officer was Lion Bill Crawford, Past International Director. As is customary, the District Governor had been previously installed by the International President Eberhard J. Wirfs, at the Minneapolis Convention. The officers were lined up in a “U” shape around the dance floor and took their oaths in unison, then pinned by their escorts. After remarks by District Governor Rudy Salvio encouraging each club to set a goal of “one positive” member this year, the evening was culminated by dancing and fellowship. Lions Evan Yankovich, Taylor O’Melveny and Susan Dorsey were proud to support San Pedro’s own Lion Tom Dorsey in his office of Zone A Chairperson.
